The QNI responds to NHS Consultation
24 October 2024
On Monday 21st October 2024, the UK Government launched an NHS reform consultation, inviting members of the public as well as NHS staff and experts to share their experiences, views and ideas for fixing the NHS.
Dubbed ‘the biggest national conversation about the future of the NHS since its birth’, the forum will be open until the start of 2025.
The responses will shape the Government’s 10 Year Health Plan to improve the health service which will be published in Spring, focusing on three big shifts in healthcare; hospital to community, analogue to digital, and sickness to prevention.
Nurses working in community settings have an excellent opportunity to give their feedback to this national consultation. As nurses are the single largest professional group in the NHS, and we believe nurses serving their communities in all fields of practice in the community comprise more than half of the nursing workforce, your voice is essential if the consultation is to be a success.
The QNI is encouraged by the government's emphasis on the move to the community for more healthcare, to greater digital and less analogue, and the emphasis on prevention rather than illness. Community nurses are at the heart of all these changes, and it is critical that we help inform decision makers with our experience and knowledge from front line care, education, and management.
This national conversation shows a clear commitment to strengthening and building the National Health Service, and this is our opportunity as nurses to help shape and improve it, for the benefit of everyone in society, beginning with a focus on what should be improved for the people in the community whom they serve.
