Nursing Heritage Calendar Celebrates 70 Years of the NHS

The Queen’s Nursing Institute 2018 wall calendar celebrates the 70th anniversary of the NHS with photographs and other images from the charity’s archive going back to 1948.
The calendar also includes quotes and snippets from 1948 issues of The Queen’s Nurses’ Magazine, including nurses’ exam questions, recipes and health news from that time. The archives show that not only food and fuel but other items such as nurses’ uniforms were subject to rationing at this time.
Dr Crystal Oldman, QNI chief executive said, ‘District and community nursing was one of the pillars on which the NHS was founded in 1948. District nursing, together with health visiting, community midwifery, school nursing and infant welfare were already well developed services when the NHS came into being. Then as now, community nurses had a central role to play in public and population health and wellbeing during a time of austerity. These services have grown and developed over the past 70 years to meet the ever changing needs of our population and we should celebrate their unique achievements.’
All proceeds from the sale of the calendar go to charity and help the QNI in its work, supporting working and retired nurses today and in the future.
