The Queen’s Nursing Institute has launched a new academic prize for students of specialist nursing programmes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Ellen Mary Memorial Prize is available for students of the Specialist Practice Qualification in General Practice Nursing (GPN SPQ). The prize is available at every university that offers the NMC- approved course.

The Prize has been made possible thanks to the generous donation by the family of a General Practice Nurse and Queen’s Nurse, Gill Boast, and is named in memory of her late mother.

Each university is invited to nominate the student in each academic year who has demonstrated the most outstanding achievement during the period of study. The criteria to assess the student’s outstanding achievement are determined by the university faculty.

Dr Crystal Oldman CBE, the QNI’s chief executive commented: ‘We are delighted to be able to offer this new prize thanks to the wonderful generosity of the family of one of our Queen’s Nurses. The Ellen Mary Memorial Prize acknowledges the significant contribution of the General Practice Nursing role and the importance of the Specialist Practitioner Qualification. I would encourage all university course leaders to participate in this new scheme.’

The new prize is the third such academic prize offered by the QNI to students of Specialist Practitioner Qualifications. The charity also awards the Goodeve-Docker Prize to student District Nurses and the Dora Rylance Prize to student Health Visitors.
