Dame Anne Marie Rafferty is Professor of Nursing Policy and Director of Academic Outreach, King’s College London. She is former Dean of the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery.
She trained as a nurse at University of Edinburgh BSc and in clinical research Nottingham University MPhil (Surgery) as well as a historian at Oxford University, DPhil (Modern History) and policy analyst at the University of Pennsylvania (Harkness Fellowship).
She was seconded to the Department of Health to work as government adviser on nursing to Lord Ara Darzi on the Next Stage Review of the NHS in 2007-8 and was a member of the Prime Minister’s Commission on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery 2009-10. She is the UK PI for the EU FP7 funded study of nurse forecasting, RN4Cast. She was Co-director of the Centre for Humanities and Health at King’s College, London 2012-13.
She is International Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto, WHO Collaborating Centre Technical University of Berlin and the European Observatory for Health Systems in Brussels. She holds Fellowships from the Royal College of Nursing, American Academy of Nursing, QNI and King’s College, London and an honorary doctorate in laws (HonLLD) from the University of Dundee.
Professor Rafferty was made Commander of the British Empire in the New Year’s Honours 2008 and made a Dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2020.
