Professor Pam Cipriano PhD is President of the International Council of Nurses and Co-Chair of UHC 2030 for the United Nations.
Dr. Pamela Cipriano, President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and Professor at the University of Virginia, is a dedicated advocate for nursing and resilient health systems. She has played a key role in global healthcare policy, promoting accessible, quality care. Previously, she served as Dean of UVA’s School of Nursing, ICN’s First Vice President, and President of the American Nurses Association from 2014 to 2018.
With over 40 years in nursing, Dr Cipriano’s career spans significant leadership roles, including Chief Clinical Officer at UVA Health, where she guided the system to its first Magnet designation. She champions safe, supportive work environments and clinician well-being, working with the National Academy of Medicine to reduce regulatory burdens.
Recognized widely for her leadership, Dr Cipriano has been honoured as a Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence at the Institute of Medicine, a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and among Modern Healthcare’s “Top 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” (2015–2018). She was also the founding editor of American Nurse Today.
